Project Summary

This Greenfields site required an integrated entertainment, information and communication system for an isolated mining construction camp. A number of imperatives were specified including flexibility in support capacity and service level, without equipment redundancy, to support:

  • Standard MATV limited services in preconstruction
  • An upgrade to RF Overlay services with expanded functionality and services in construction phase
  • a further up-grade to Full-IP “interactive” services in operations phase

A GPON network was specified. Further considerations included employee attraction and retention.

Scope of Work

Swift Networks was contracted to provide end to end services for a turnkey solution providing integrated Digital Services “in-room” throughout the camp including:

  • Foxtel and Free-To-Air (FTA) television services with electronic program guide
  • FTA radio services
  • Scheduled Movies upgrading to user-pay Video on Demand (including movies, training & custom industry content)
  • VoIP telephony (with capped and integrated billing)
  • Internet access to the room – upgradable to access via television and PC access
  • Infrastructure to upgrade to Individual Profile / Smart Card access and billing system
  • Messaging system for inter-room and camp-wide messaging
  • Emergency Warning System Integration
  • Customised Static and Dynamic Content including integration of client's corporate branding throughout
  • Ongoing Network management and support
  • Project design, engineering and project management
  • Full supply and installation of fibre optic structured cabling including civil's
  • Integrated connectivity to Mine Operations and Camp Administration areas

Outcomes

Challenges

  • Flexibility in service level
  • No permanent power to site
  • Remote and isolated location
  • Short lead-time
  • Harsh environment necessitated ruggedised network equipment
  • A VSAT solution was required to provide carrier service

Key Outcomes

The project was delivered in record time (12 weeks from receipt of PO) and on budget. This site continues to grow and Swift Networks is delivering upgraded functionality and additional expansions.

“Before them (Swift Networks), we were unable to provide our employees, contractors and management virtually any services whereas now we have a great entertainment system but also are connected to the rest of the world.”
- Resource Company CIT Executive, Pilbara WA

“We find that word gets out amongst the work force and when we mention Swift Networks is part of the services provided, we get a much better response to our recruitment programs”
